Old boards swapped for modern RCBO consumer units with surge protection, plus EICR condition reports for homeowners and landlords across Harrogate and North Yorkshire.

Consumer unit upgrades

A modern board isolates the fault, not the house

The point of an upgrade isn’t the white box on the wall. It’s that each circuit gets its own RCBO, so a failing kettle trips the kitchen sockets and nothing else — instead of putting the whole house, and the freezer, in the dark.

  • RCBO per circuit so one fault doesn’t take everything out
  • Surge protection (SPD) fitted as standard on new boards
  • Earthing and main bonding checked and brought up to standard where needed
  • Every circuit tested and labelled — no more guessing which breaker is which
  • Certificate issued on completion

Warning signs

Four reasons to stop putting it off

Not every old board needs replacing tomorrow. These four do need looking at.

01

Rewireable fuses

If your board still takes fuse wire, it predates RCD protection entirely. Nothing will disconnect fast enough to protect a person.

02

No RCD at all

Plastic board, black switches, no test button. Common in houses that haven’t been touched since the 80s.

03

One RCD for everything

Better, but a fault on any circuit takes out the whole house — including the freezer and the alarm.

04

Heat damage or buzzing

Browning around the terminals, a burnt smell or a buzz under load means loose connections. That’s a fire risk, not a maintenance job.

EICR testing

An EICR tells you what the wiring is actually like

An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a full inspection and test of the fixed wiring, with every issue coded by severity — C1 for danger present, C2 for potentially dangerous, C3 for improvement recommended. You get a clear report rather than an opinion.

  • Landlords: required every five years or at change of tenancy
  • Buying or selling: the quickest way to know what you’re taking on
  • Older properties: especially anything with rubber, lead or fabric insulated cable still in place
  • Remedial work quoted separately so you can decide what to do and when
